How to Dress for a Wedding Reception
Wedding receptions are often formal events that require you to wear attire that is appropriate. Appropriate attire means choosing an outfit that is right for the season, venue and dress code so that you can enjoy the reception as comfortably and respectfully as possible.
- Look at the invitation for the wedding and reception that you are attending to see if a dress code is indicated. If you see that there is an indication of casual or formal, choose clothing accordingly.
- If you are not asked to dress in any way specifically, it is wise to dress in a formal dress. Wedding receptions are special events and you should find an outfit in your closet that is for a more formal occasion.
- If you do not have an outfit prepared for the wedding reception, purchase an outfit from a store that offers a variety of formal outfits. Go to a department store or formal attire shop in your area to find an outfit that looks appropriate for the reception.
- Any color of dress is appropriate for wedding receptions. Black is even acceptable as long as your outfit does not look as though it is intended for a funeral.
- Choose an outfit for the wedding reception that is comfortable and will allow for movement. Many receptions involve dancing and you will want to make sure that you are dressed to do this so that you can enjoy the event completely.
- Look at the location of the wedding reception to get an indication of how you should dress. Some venues like country clubs may have dress codes of their own that you should follow when attending.
- If you are attending a wedding and reception that is theme-based, find out if you are supposed to be dressed within this theme. Many times this will be indicated on the invitation but if you are not sure, contact a member of the wedding party to find out.
- Make sure to dress appropriately for the season that the wedding reception is being held. Summer weddings will allow for light fabrics while winter weddings may require heavier dress. This will ensure that you are comfortable throughout the entire event.
