How to Dye a Human Hair Wig
Purchasing a good quality human hair wig is not cheap, as many people have discovered. They can cost several hundred dollars depending on the style. Unlike wigs made with synthetic hair, wigs made with human hair can be dyed without causing damage to the piece.
Wash the wig to remove any buildup of dirt and oils, and allow it to air-dry overnight. Place the wig into a sink filled with cool water and gently cleanse the wig with dishwashing soap. Rinse the wig thoroughly and allow it to dry.
Place the dried wig on a mannequin head. Make certain you have plenty of space around you to work easily. Also, make certain you are working in a well ventilated room.
Divide the hair into four even sections using a large-tooth comb. Clip back each section with plastic hair clips.
Use an at-home coloring system of your choice and mix as directed on the instructions.
Put on some plastic gloves and apply the dye to the wig starting at the top and moving around the crown.
After the crown of the wig is completely covered, start applying the dye to each of the other three sections.
Cover the wig with plastic (if directed to do so using the specific hair color you have chosen) and time the color. To avoid over-processing, do not allow the dye to stay on hair for more than 25 minutes.
Rinse out the dye and apply a conditioner to the hair.
Dry and style as desired.
