How to Earn an Associate's Degree

Anyone new to post-secondary education information may find it difficult to learn how to earn an associate’s degree. Confusion may set in on what questions to ask or who will answer them. A good guide can help make the process of earning an associate’s degree at school or online easier.

1. Decide on a goal area. Consider the main objective or outcome you desire from an associate’s degree program. Some people choose a two year degree as a stepping stone for a four-year degree and choose courses based on that plan. The job title or field will influence the main subject studied.

2. Gather information. Search online or in person for post-secondary schools that offer programs in the area of interest. Associate’s degree programs are offered at technical schools, colleges and some universities. A few things to consider are: whether day and night classes are available, part time or full time options, cost and web classes. Consider all options before selecting the right place for you.

3. Perform admission steps. Many schools have an admissions policy that includes a written or online form, an assessment test, fees and educational transcripts. Remember to call the admissions or registrar’s office regarding questions and deadlines for enrollment.

4. Meet with an advisor. Make an appointment with an academic advisor on courses to take for your first semester as a student. The advisor may need to sign a registration form for enrollment in a specific class.

5. Become a scholar. Attend all general and major courses related to earning an associate’s degree. Remember to perform schoolwork and ask for help, if needed. Some degrees require an internship, which is a required component of the program.  Continue taking classes until all requirements are met.

6. Complete a graduation form. This last step is the most important of achieving the Associate’s degree. Many colleges have a deadline for completing and returning this important form.
