How to Embroider a Dog Collar

Creating a thoughtfully embroidered dog collar adds personal character to this functional dog accessory. Use a dog collar that fits your pet and add embroidery to the collar. If you do not have an embroidery sewing machine, you can still make an embroidery design using a method similar to cross stitching.

Items Needed:

  • Dog collar

  • A needle

  • Embroidery floss

  • Fabric chalk or marker

  • Pattern

  1. Choose an embroidery color that is visible on the collar. Put the thread in the needle and make a knot at the end of the thread.

  2. Identify a spot along the top part of the collar and another spot on the opposite side. Mark the pattern with a piece of different colored chalk to use as a guide to place the embroidery. The pattern could include the dog’s name, a favorite quote or an abstract design.

  3. Push the needle through several thread layers of the collar picking a few threads up at a time so that the embroidery thread is secured on the collar. Avoid sewing through the collar since this is difficult and may appear messy. Instead, aim to embroider a layer on top of the existing collar.

  4. Stitch the design on the collar using a cross-stitch number pattern to help you to spell the dogs name or make the design. Make sure any letters are readable by ensuring that when you finish one letter, you thread a couple of stitches with the needle while knotting the thread. This way, the letters will not be too close making them hard to read.

  5. Finish embroidering the collar from one end to the other and backstitch the embroidery a little to keep it in place. Stitch the finishing on both sides and both ends to prevent tearing.
