How to Find the Right Dog Food Bowl

Selecting the correct food bowl for your dog will help to ensure that he is getting the correct amount of nutrients he needs without being over fed. This is actually more important than it may sound for the health of your pet. Also, several types of bowls can have harmful toxins in them that can end up poisoning your dog. Knowing what these are can help to eliminate these problems.

  1. Go to the pet store and look in the dog feeding isle. There will be a large selection of dog food bowls to choose from. Be wary of plastic ones as they often have harsh chemicals in them that can make your dog very ill. Make your choice between the metal, ceramic or porcelain bowls. If you choose metal, make sure they are nickel free. Ceramic and porcelain bowls should be glaze and paint free to avoid any seeping into the dog's food. Keep in mind the excitement level of your dog. If they get very hyperactive about food, selecting a ceramic or porcelain bowl is not a good option.

  2. Consider your dog's size. If you have a small dog like a Chihuahua, a large bowl is impractical. Most people simply fill the bowl up without measuring a proper amount of food for their dog's weight and size. This causes over eating, as a god often won't stop until the food is gone.

  3. Choose between an automatic feeder and a one-meal dog bowl. If your dog has issues with leaving the food bowl alone, an automatic feeder is a bad idea because they could end up eating more than is healthy for them.
