How to Engrave Glass and Giftware

Nothing personalizes a gift better than having it engraved with a special quote or loving sentiment. Glass is especially beautiful when engraved, particularly when it is etched with a delicate design. Learning the art of engraving does take a little patience and a very steady hand, but the joy that you provide to that special person when you add a token of affection like engraving is immeasurable.

Engraving glass or other giftware is really very simple. You only need a few tools and materials to get started and you can be on your way to creating a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

Things You'll Need:

  • Liquid soap

  • Hand towel

  • Paper towels

  • Non-permanent marking pen or pencil

  • Engraving tool

  • Stencils (optional, for designs)

  1. Pick a place where you can spread your materials out for easy use. You also need a good sturdy table with ample lighting to give you the best view.

  2. Use the liquid soap to help clean the item you are going to engrave. Dry with the hand towel. Be sure your surface is completely free from dust particles.

  3. Take the marking pen and trace letters or create your design using the stencil.

  4. Grasp the engraving tool and begin to press the tip onto the object and follow the pattern you created with the marking pen. Make sure you are getting deep enough into the glass or gift to make a good impression. Complete the letters or design.

  5. Dampen the hand towel and remove any traces left from the marking pen and dust particles created by the engraving tool. Let dry. Clean the entire object with the liquid soap to get rid of all fingerprints and smudges. Dry with paper towels.

  6. Place the gift into the desired box or bag and present.
