How to Estimate Commercial Concrete Work

Concrete is commonly used for driveways, both commercial and residential. Due to its low maintenance requirements, cost-effectiveness and durability, concrete has become the most popular choice for paving. Most people rely on concrete contractors to do the needed concrete work for their project. There are a few simple steps you can take to get an estimate of your concrete work.

  1. Determine exactly what you want to do. Decide if you want to remove old concrete, rock or greenery before putting a new concrete. This work will greatly affect the cost if you will be hiring a contractor to do it.

  2. Take measurements of the area to be worked on. Square off any irregularly shaped portions, to obtain an estimate of its dimension in square feet. Multiply the length by the width to determine the area in square feet. Multiply that figure by the intended thickness of the concrete to determine the cubic feet of concrete. Convert to cubic yards by dividing the cubic feet by 27.

  3. Obtain quotes from contractors. Consult with a few contractors and ask for quotes. Try to get them to break out prices into labor costs and material, then compare estimates. It is important that you compare factors such as recommended work, their price structure and estimated time for completion. Completion time is especially important if the contractor is charging you by the hour.

  4. Calculate how long it will take to complete the project. Most contractors charge by the hour, so it is important that you have an idea how many hours the project will require. Once you know the length of the project, you simply multiply the number of hours by the charge per hour.

  5. Choose the contractor that offers you the best deal. With all this information you have collected, you should have no problem choosing the best offer for your needs.
