How to Make a Fire Safety Plan

How to Explain Fire Safety Procedures

Knowing proper fire safety procedures is a great way to protect yourself and your family from the dangers that a house fire can bring. Fire can spread very quickly leaving your escape options limited; therefore, it is a good idea to have a plan in place. Explaining this plan to your children and other family members is the key to keeping them safe in the event of a fire.

  1. Use Diagrams! Diagrams are a great way to help people understand your fire safety plan through the use of visual aids. Draw a map of each floor of your home if you have multiple floors. Mark important areas such as windows and doors in a specific color so that they stand out from the rest of the diagram. Develop a plan for each floor of your home just in case it is not possible for everyone to reach the same escape point in the house.

  2. Provide demonstrations and have safety drills. This is a great way to help someone understand what they should do in the event of a fire. Show children how to stop, drop and roll in the event that their clothes catch on fire. Walk through the entire plan from beginning to end just as you would if there was an actual fire in your home.

  3. Schedule fire drills in your home. These should be scheduled on a regular basis to help everyone become comfortable with the fire safety plan. You should have a fire drill at least once a month so that everyone will know exactly what to do in case of an emergency. Reward children for being successful, as this will help them to strive to understand what is expected of them.

  4. Visit fire safety presentations such as those run by the fire department. You will often see these advertised in the community. They will offer a makeshift fire inside of a trailer with smoke that simulates that of an actual fire. This can help children understand what to expect in the event of a real fire.
