How to Prepare an At-Home Fire Safety Plan

How to Make a Fire Safety Plan

A house fire can be a terrifying experience for everyone involved. Especially if you are unprepared and do not know what to do in the event of a fire. Many people can become paralyzed by their fear and end up trapped inside of their house. Having a fire safety plan in place will help you and your family to react when a fire starts so that everyone is able to reach safety in time.

  1. Call a family meeting to discuss the importance of fire safety.

  2. Ask your family members what they would do in the event of a fire in your home to find out what they already know about fire safety.

  3. Go over fire safety tips such as staying low to the ground to avoid the smoke, feeling door handles before opening them and how to stop, drop and roll if your clothes catch on fire. It is important that all members of your family know the basic fire safety rules.

  4. Draw a diagram of your home so that you can map out an escape route from every room in your home. You want to be sure that you have at least two methods for escape for each room in your home. Be sure that all family members are clear on the plan of action.

  5. Practice fire drills in your home to enforce the escape plan that you have drawn up. Provide safety ladders for upstairs bedrooms so that you can easily use an upstairs window as a way to escape from a house fire. Be sure to use the fire alarm that will normally go off in the event of an actual fire so that children can become accustomed to the sound of the alarm. This will help them not to become paralyzed with fear in the event of a fire.

  6. Determine a meeting spot where your family is to meet once they have escaped the home. A fire can be a scary time and knowing that everyone is safe will help you to feel much better about the situation.
