How to File a Hostile Work Environment Complain
Hostile work environments can be frustrating and cause a lot of stress at work. However, you have the right to file a claim against that work environment. There could be several reasons as to why your work environment has become hostile and it is about time you start getting it situated.
- Keep track of all incidents in a notepad. Every time there is an incident that occurs in your workplace you should keep track of it. Keep a notepad close and write down whenever something happens that can be used in your complaint.
- Research the different workplace laws in your state. Pay close attention to the violations that have occurred in your situation and make sure you document them correctly. Some states want you to report the claim within a couple months of it occurring.
- Find out how to contact your state’s labor department. Some states deal with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and you can check out their website to see the complaint filing process.
- Talk to your boss or supervisor. If the incident does not include your supervisor then you should start the complaint by talking with them. Hostile work environments should try to be settled within the company if at all possible. Places like EEOC are there to help workplaces solve disputes but their resources are finite.
- File your complaint. You can file your complaint with your state’s labor board, through your employer or even through the EEOC. Each situation may be different so be sure to file through the correct facility.
