How to Find Authentic Antiques

If you are unfamiliar with antiques it is easy to end up buying a piece that is not authentic. Having a keen eye, knowing what to ask and doing a little research can be beneficial to you before making your purchase. There are some key factors to consider when deciding if an antique is an authentic piece.

1. Look at the antique in good light.

The better the light, the easier it is to spot a fake.

2. Ask the owner to point out any known repairs.

Look carefully at the hardware on the antique, paying attention to any casters that have been removed or replaced.

3. Check the finish.

The inside finish should not match that of the outside. Signs of wear should be in the proper places on the outside of the antique.

4. Inspect any holes you may see.

Holes that serve no purpose can mean a piece has been replaced.

5. Inspect screws and nails in the piece.

Older screws have flat tips, flat heads and unseen threads. Old nails are different sizes and bleed into the wood around the nail hole. Both of these can be rusted and hard to remove.

If you are unsure whether an antique is authentic, visit your local museum or do an online search for comparison.
