How to Find Free Community Services

You may need to find free community services if you or your family have fallen on hard times.  To find these services contact the Social Services office for your county or look for churches that offer assistance to community members.  Also, you can call 2-1-1 to get information about the types of services that are offered in your area for free.

  • Locate the Social Services office for the county that you live in to get assistance. Visit this office and fill out an application for services like food stamps, welfare, and low cost housing.  These services are free to people and families in need and this is the first place you should look for community services if you need help right away.

  • Locate a church in your area to see if they offer any sort of community services. Often times churches will offer food, clothing and counseling to members of their community who really need it.  Also, sometimes churches will help individuals find jobs in the area so ask if this is offered if you need employment to get back on your feet.

  • Look for community job centers in your area that offer job training, computer learning and resume building.  Many cities offer these types of job centers free to help unemployed individuals in their job search.  If you are unsure where to find one of these centers call your local unemployment office to see if they can give you an address or phone number that you can call.

  • Call 2-1-1 to find information about local community services.  2-1-1 is used nationally to help people find the services that they need in the location where they live.  Use this number to get information about free health services, social services or government resources.
