How to Start a Community Service Group
Community service groups are important to any community. Starting a community service group is rewarding to the community and the volunteers because it fosters pride and commitment to the neighborhoods they serve. Leading a community service group takes some organization and the desire to make a difference.
Community service groups can help communities by volunteering their time or money to provide a specific purpose. The tasks can range from painting over graffiti at local parks or schools, planting a community garden, set up a neighborhood watch, or raising money for area projects. We all want to live in beautiful peaceful neighborhoods, so organizing a beautification project will help all the residents.
- Speak with other residents in your
community about volunteering for the community service group. You
can place flyers on doors throughout the neighborhood or knock on
doors and request help. A better response is received when speaking
with the residents in person because it is harder to say no to
volunteering when the people are face to face. - Ask the residents for phone
numbers and email addresses so it is easy to contact everyone
involved. - Decide on a project that the group
can help with. Some good ideas are cleaning up a neighborhood park,
assisting a local youth center with purchasing new equipment,
assisting at a local school, collect books for a public library,
host a neighborhood party so the residents can meet others and gain
information about the community service group, or plant trees in the
neighborhood. - Have regular meetings at least one
a month with members or the group and open the meetings with ideas
for new projects.
