How to Find Free Wireless Internet Access

Whether you're traveling around town or planning a trip out of town, you may eventually need access to the Internet. While you can always pay to go online, there are many locations that offer free Internet access. Often these locations are food-related, such as coffee shops, however almost any location may provide free service to its patrons. To save money when traveling, there are simple ways to find free Internet access.

  1. Do a search for free Internet access using your home computer. There are directories online that list these locations. To find these directories, type in "Free Wi-Fi Spots" or "Free Internet Spots" and your zip code or the zip code for the area that you'll be traveling to.

  2. Make a phone call to any location that you find. Occasionally the information found online can be outdated. If this is the case the restaurant, coffee shop, etc. may no longer be in business or they may no longer offer Internet service for free.

  3. Ask around. If you are traveling out of town and don't know where to find access to the Internet, ask the person at the front desk of the hotel where you are staying or inquire at a coffee shop. Even if the coffee shop doesn't offer free use of the Internet, chances are they can direct you to who does.

  4. Look for applications to put on your phone. Today's telephones have applications for nearly every need. This includes finding free Internet spots. Depending on the application it may be available for free or there may be a fee associated with it.

  5. Look up your city's website for information on Internet access spots. Some cities will list both paid and free Wi-Fi locations.
