How to Find Good Municipal Golf Courses to Play

Finding a good municipal golf course to play is a task that requires knowing where to look for the information.  Fortunately, there are several ways to not only find out where these courses are located, but also get an idea of the nature of the courses and whether the courses are worth your time.

  • Use your social contacts.  Asking around at work and among friends for information on municipal golf courses can often provide several good leads, as well as get some idea of the quality of the courses.  With a little luck, you will have some sort of social connection to people who have actually played the courses and can provide some first-hand opinions.

  • Consult the local chamber of commerce.  Chambers normally have information on community activities and facilities, including specifics on any municipal golf courses located in or near the area they serve.  This will often provide additional data that can be used to research the courses in more detail.

  • Check with golfing associations.  Many of these associations maintain exhaustive lists of municipal golf courses located in different areas.  Some will even include a rating system that can help you develop an idea of the quality of the courses, something that may be very helpful when travelling to a new city or town.

  • Do an Internet search.  Include the name of the city you are visiting along with the word “golf” or the phrase “golf course.”  This will often provide results for any local courses that may be of interest.  Many of these courses will either be featured on local city websites, or have a site of its own that provides specific information about the course, including fees, hours of operation and any amenities available.
