How to Find Ice Fishing Spots

Quality ice fishing spots are like gold to fisherman. Finding the right spot might take a long time, but will be well worth the wait. There is obviously no exact science to finding quality fishing spots, you'll have to do your homework and be persistent.

Things You'll Need:

  • Pencil

  • Paper

  • Map

  • Global Positioning System

  1. Make a list of lakes and ponds in your area. Use a quality map so you can clearly see where all the lakes and ponds are located. You might have to look many miles from your home if you don't live around a lot of water. This might also be a good idea to determine how far you're willing to travel.

  2. Consult with local experts at bait shops and outdoor stores. There should be several people with a lot of knowledge about quality fishing spots. Make sure you take detailed notes about what they're saying. Try finding websites that talk about local fishing spots. You might be able to talk with other fisherman in a chat room.

  3. Try finding spots that will be the most sheltered from the wind and snow. Being comfortable while fishing will also help you catch fish because you'll want to stay longer.

  4. Be patient but don't be afraid to move to different spots. If you start catching fish in a certain spot, write down detailed notes about the area and time of day. It would be a good idea to bring a global positioning system (GPS) with you so you know the coordinates.
