How to Find Modern Dance Music

Modern dance is a dance style that has evolved from classical ballet. Like the dance style, the music used for modern dance breaks the tradition for classical music in dance. Modern dance music can be derived from various sounds and artists.

• Look for sounds that would not normally be classified as music. Modern dance can be done in many ways. The music used does not have to be a traditional song. Some modern dances use sounds like ocean waves or jungle life. Some modern dances are even done with spoken word pieces as a backing track.

• Search on YouTube. There are a lot of dance videos available on YouTube. Use them to get ideas for songs.

• Ask someone to create something for you. If you have a friend that plays an instrument, ask them if they can compose a piece for you. This way you will have a special piece of music that no one else owns.

• Listen to the music in movies. A lot of movies use a score and a soundtrack. Look at who the composer for the movie was and what the songs on the soundtrack were. If you like the composer, look at other work they've done for more modern dance music.

• Look up music in the singer/songwriter genre. Go to shows or look on different websites for singer songwriters. This genre is one of the main styles currently being used in the modern dance genre. This type of music commonly has acoustic sounds and sometimes a "bluesy" or jazz background.
