How to Find Teacher Employment Overseas

Teaching overseas can be a wonderful experience that an educator can treasure for many years. There are some things to consider before teaching abroad. A teaching certificate is required and depending on the country, there may be additional requirements such as age and experience level.

  • Determine the country to teach in. This is perhaps the most crucial part of the process. The location selected will depend on a number of variables. For this reason, a personal assessment should be done. For instance, if the goal is to teach in a warm climate, then less pay should be expected. If salary is a concern, then colder areas like Switzerland and Norway pay much better.

  • Check the requirements for the country of interest. Once a destination has been chosen, the preparation process begins. Research needs to be done to determine if qualifications are met. For example, China has an age limit on how old a teacher can be. A visa will also be required, so this application process needs to be completed as soon as the destination is chosen.

  • Research the teaching style for the country chosen. Review the teaching system used for the overseas location. The earlier the research is done, the better the adaption process will be with the new educational system.

  • Speak with other teachers who have taught abroad. This is a great way to get input and feedback on what it is like to teach overseas.

  • Accept a temporary assignment. There are many temporary assignments available for teaching overseas. Even if a teacher is already employed in the states, there are some schools that will allow a leave of absence to teach abroad. This will provide a teacher with the opportunity to test the waters, so to speak.

  • Sign up online. There are a number of teaching websites that post overseas jobs.
