How to Find Teacher Employment in a Recession

If you have a passion for teaching, it might be difficult to get your own classroom during a recession. If you consider adding an extra endorsement to your credentials or look into teaching jobs overseas, you just might be lucky enough to find work.

  • Go back to school to become endorsed in a high-need area. Teachers for mathematics, sciences, ESL and special education are in high demand. Seek out a university or online college that fulfills the requirements in your state to receive an endorsement. This will widen your horizons and increase the chances that you will find a permanent position.

  • Consider signing up to teach for the Department of Defense. This can be an exciting opportunity to teach the children of military families. Excellent benefits and a living allowance are offered, plus the opportunity to travel. There are teaching positions in Europe, the Pacific and Guam.

  • Research teaching English as a second language to students overseas. Many independent organizations recruit teachers that are fluent in English to teach it as a second language to students in other countries. You will need a current TEFL or TESOL certificate to take advantage of these exciting opportunities. Most organizations will want you to sign a contract and will pay you a monthly salary. Some may also cover your living expenses. Teaching overseas can be a unique experience that expands your teaching abilities and speaks volumes on a resume.

  • Look to independent tutoring centers and preschools for teaching positions. Often you will be able to pick up a part-time job teaching preschool or tutoring kids after school. Tutoring centers often hire qualified teachers year round and classes run during the summer as well.
