How to Find Warm Winter Coats

Wintertime is supposed to be cold. Having the right outerwear can make the difference between goose bumps and being cozy while outside. Finding the right winter coat for a specific person will depend on body shape, personal style and how warm that person wants to be.

  • Find the right type of coat for a specific body type. This is easy when looking at coats and bodies with a wide perspective and an open mind. Looking good and keeping warm can go hand in hand. It's a matter of choosing the right winter coat for the right body.

  • Choose a coat based on fabric as well as fit. Personal style will dictate if the coat needs to be lined with fleece or made of completely of wool. There is no need to pretend to be a puffy penguin, especially in Florida. The outside material of coat is important as well. Wet weather will call for specific material. If there is a chance of wetness in the forecast a slick outer material is needed.

  • Check the stitching, any buttons or snaps, and if applicable the zipper. All of these should be tightly and neatly stitched for security and warmth. Not all winter coats are made equal and checking the stitching will prevent early maintenance on the coat.

  • Look to find out if the coat is wash and wear. A moleskin coat that needs to be dry cleaned might not be the best choice for a child. When shopping for a child's coat, the easier it is to take care of, the easier it is for the parents.

  • Try it on first. Always try the coat on before buying or leaving the store. An ill fitting winter coat will leave a person in the cold. A child should always try on a coat before a parent or loved one buys the coat. This will mean when the coat is put on for the winter it will be comfortable and warm.

  • Make sure whomever the coat is for is happy with it. A child or teenager who is not happy with a winter coat will stay cold, preferring to not wear a coat over being cold.
