How to Find a Community Service Program Helping Disabled People

A disabled person may have a hard time helping themselves when it comes to driving or receiving assistance. This does not mean the person is not capable but it means that their disability physically or mentally keeps them from achieving these tasks. There are many programs that are available to help those who are disabled.

  1. Look in your local phone book to find programs that help disabled people. There may be programs that you are not aware of but do exist in your community.

  2. Check with your local United Way. United Way is a program that overseas several other smaller programs in many towns. The United Way in your town may have a community service program that helps disabled people. These services may include transportation, medical or even help with food.

  3. Call around to local churches in your area. Many churches have the resources to help those who need it the most. While most churches do not always have specific programs, some churches are willing to help those in need. Community services are a part of connecting a local church with the actual community.

  4. Construct your own community service program to help disabled people in your town. A community service program is made special because of the people in it. If you are part of a sports team, youth group or any other group, then you should consider reaching out and helping those in need.

  5. Ask for a referral from the health department or welfare office.  Health departments and welfare offices are often given information so that others can benefit. If you or someone you know are disabled, make sure to check with a local referral agency. The referral agency may be able to send you in the right direction.
