How to Find a Cosmetologist
Your cosmetologist or hairdresser can be a trusted confidant and the only person you will allow to work on your hair or nails. Moving to a new city is stressful enough without having to worry about a bad hair day. If you just moved to a new town and you don’t know where to get your next manicure, you may want to try a few of these tips.
The most important thing to remember when you are choosing a new cosmetologist or hairdresser is that you must feel comfortable with her. The person sewing in your tracks or painting decals on your toe-nails will be in control of your personal image, you should always feel able to talk to them, let them know what you like and what you want to change. Being able to communicate with your stylist is a great stress relief because you never have to worry about ending up with a hairstyle or nail color you don’t like. A professional cosmetologist will have vision and drive, but still be able to work with you and take some constructive criticism when it comes to your look. Keep in mind that these are artists and you are their medium, so they want you to look good, too.
- Ask your co-worker or girlfriend who always has fabulous hair. You can even ask your old hairdresser if she has a connection in your new town. As with any other service, word-of-mouth is the most popular form of advertising, and can be the most reliable.
- Try a few different specialists at several salons before you settle on one. Have your nails done in one shop, and then go down the street to get your pedicure. You can test the waters before you make a decision, and then you will know what is out there when you are comparing what is available to what you really want.
- Check out the customers coming out of a salon before you go in to get something done. Do they look well put together? Is their hair attractive and healthy? Do their nails look neat? These are all signs of an excellent shop and an experienced cosmetologist.
- Check out the shop and see if it is clean and organized. When you are operating in chaos, your work tends to be shoddy or chaotic in itself. Also, look to see if it is an environment you will be comfortable sitting in for a few hours.
- Go over in your mind all your favorite things about your last cosmetologist and compare those to what you have found in your area. You may also want to consider how much you are willing to pay for your regular services. Knowing what you want is the only way to go get it.
It may be difficult to come to a final decision when you trust someone with your style, but remember: cosmetologists are trained and licensed professionals. Be sure the one you choose is licensed in your state and has trained for the appropriate amount of time. Ask them how long they have been doing what they do, and what their overall experience has been like. Do not be afraid to ask questions, it’s the only way to get answers.
