How to Find a Neurologist

If you feel that you may have a problem with your brain, spinal cord, nerves or muscles, then you need to find a neurologist, which can be challenging. Neurologists can often be found through recommendations from other people and researching. Here are a few things that you can try to find a neurologist.

  1. Make an appointment with your primary care physician and ask her to refer you to a neurologist. Discuss your concerns surrounding your neurological system in great detail with your doctor. Perhaps you are experiencing constant tingling in your hands and feet, or you've been suffering from severe headaches; whatever your symptoms, go through them in detail with your doctor so she can determine if a trip to neurology is necessary. Each neurologist has a particular area that they may specialize in. Your doctor will be able to assign you to a neurologist best suited for your needs.

  2. Check to see which neurologists are covered by your insurance. Your insurance company will usually include a list of preferred and recommended neurologists in your plan. Your doctor should have this list and be aware of the preferred providers, but double-check just to make sure that the neurologist recommended by your doctor is included in your healthcare coverage.

  3. Make an appointment with the neurologist your doctor referred you to. Make sure you discuss your health concerns in great detail with the neurologist. Make sure any tests the neurologist wishes to perform are covered by your insurance. If you do not like the neurologist your doctor recommended, return to your primary care physician for a referral to a different doctor.
