How to Find a Pediatric Dentist
Going to the dentist can be scary for anyone, especially a child. Choosing the right dentist will help her feel more comfortable and save you from fighting to get her in the chair. Some simple steps will ensure you have selected the right dentist for your child.
1. Talk to other parents. Word of mouth has and will always be one of the best ways to get information on professionals. Ask other parents what dentist they use and what their experience has been. When you have more than one rave review on the same dentist, you may have found who you're looking for.
2. Go online. Many websites are set up for the sole purpose of reviewing doctors, dentists and other professionals. Maybe the dentist you are considering has been reviewed. This is also a great way to find out about dentists you otherwise may not have heard of.
3. Call the dentists office. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Ask if they are child-friendly. Find out if they have toys or children's books in the waiting room. Find out what kinds of special procedures they have in place to get children to cooperate once they are in the chair. Ask if your child can bring her favorite toy to hold during the cleaning and examination. Sometimes this can ease the anxiety in children. Determine if you are allowed to stay with your child during all procedures. This rule varies from office to office. If you have a younger child, you may want to choose an office that will let you stay with her at all times.
4. Make the appointment. Speak confidently to your child about the dentist to help them be comfortable. When you arrive, check out your surroundings. Notice the staff and whether or not they greet you in a friendly voice. Pay attention to wait time before being called as this can be a sign of a badly run office.
5. Prepare to walk out. You are allowed to leave and take your child with you if at any time you feel uncomfortable with the situation. Don't feel like you are obligated to let them work on your child's teeth if they have done something you don't approve of. There are always other dentists and sometimes it is a matter of trial and error when it comes to finding the right one for you child. Their comfort and ability to successfully get through the dental procedures count on them having the right dentist.
