How to Fix Bicycle Pedals
Bike pedals can get damaged easily, especially if you ride your bike a lot. Since pedals are often the first thing to make contact with the ground during the rider's spill, pedals get damaged with almost every turn. Most types of pedals, especially steel are often repairable.
Things You'll Need:
- New bearing
- Pedal wrench
- Box wrench
- Terry cloth
- Vice
- Wood block
- Hammer
- Screwdriver
- Bearing grease
- Stabilize the bike using its kickstand or a bike rack. Use a pedal wrench and turn it counter-clockwise to loose the nut located on the right side of the pedal. Remove the right-sided pedal from the bike's right crank, and set the pedal aside.
- Loosen the nut located on the left sided pedal by turning the pedal wrench clockwise. Remove the left sided pedal from the bike's left crank arm and set the pedal aside.
- Use a box wrench to remove the nuts located at the end of the pedal shafts. On each pedal remove the center shafts by sliding them out of the shaft sleeves. Remove any straps or clips you see on the pedals, and set them aside along with the shaft sleeves.
- Use a wood block and a hammer to straighten the dented or bent surfaces of the pedal. To pound out the dent, the block should be placed on the inside of the pedal. Place a terry cloth on top of a vice and lay the terry cloth over the outside of the pedal. This is used as protection as you use a hammer to straighten out the outward bend areas of the pedal.
- Push a screwdriver end into a shaft sleeve until it reaches the bearing that is on the opposite end of the sleeve. Pop the bearing out of the bearing race by tapping the end of the screwdriver with a hammer. Repeat this process to remove any remaining bearings from the sleeves.
- Put on the new bearing at then end of a sleeve. Position it the bearing race by tapping the end of the screwdriver until it is place. Apply a thin coat of bearing grease on the inside of each bearing wall.
- Reattach the straps and clips to the pedals. Reinsert the sleeves and shafts on the pedals and then screw the nuts back on the pedal shafts, and tighten with a box wrench. Put the pedals back on the crank arms and secure them in place using the pedal wrench.
