How to Remove Cycle Pedals
Cycle pedals can seem tricky at first to remove, but are not as difficult as one may think. Whether you need to replace your pedals or just repair them, you need to first know how to remove your pedals. With a couple tools and a few minutes of your time, you can easily remove your cycle pedals.
Materials Needed:
- Wood block
- Pedal wrench or Allen key
- WD-40 (optional)
- Shift your bike's gears to place your chain on the largest chair ring. This step is not necessary if you don’t have multiple chain rings.
- Give your pedal extra leverage by placing a wood block underneath the first pedal that you will remove.
- Look for the flat area on the pedal's axle, usually located next to the crank arm. If you are unable to find a flat area on your pedal, then look for a hole that is located at the end of the pedal's axle.
- Take the wrench and position it so that it is gripping the pedal around the flat area if you had one. If your pedal's axle does not have a flat area, then attach an Allen Key to the hole that is located at the end of the pedal's axle.
- Turn the wrench clockwise for the left pedal and counter-clockwise for the right pedal. Generally, you turn the wrench of the pedal in the direction towards the back of the bicycle. If you are having a hard time turning the wrench or the area seems a little rusted, spray a little WD-40 on the area and allow a few minutes for it to soak. This should make the wrench easier to use.
- Continue to turn the wrench or Allen key until the pedals is removed from the bike.
