How to Fix Body Kits
Body kits are specialized customizations of a vehicle that add a bit of personality and style to the overall appearance. These kits replace the standard pieces of a truck or car, such as the bumpers and side skirts. When damage occurs to these specialized pieces, you are able to fix them so they do not diminish in style or value.
Things You Will Need:
- Sander
- Flexible body filler
- Masking tape
- Primer
- Paint
- Clear coat
- Sand the area that is damaged until it is smooth with no jagged or rough edges.
- Apply flexible body filler in a thick coat over the damaged area, so that all dents and scrapes are covered. Allow this to dry for at least 30 minutes, or however long the manufacturer’s directions state.
- Sand this area until it is flush with the surrounding surface. This area must look like it was the original shape of the piece and must not have any imperfections. Continue to sand until it is completely smooth and shaped to match the original design.
- Sand the surrounding area of the damage piece to ensure that there is a smooth transition from the original surface to the sanded filler. There should be no visible cracks in the body kits, so sand until the entire surface is smooth.
- Cover the undamaged areas of your vehicle and your body kit with masking tape. This protects it from getting paint on it when it does not need to be painted. Another option is to sand the entire vehicle and apply paint to the entire car.
- Spray primer onto the repaired area and follow with four coats of paint. The primer needs at least 30 minutes of drying time and the coats of paint must be thin. Each coat must dry for five minutes before applying the next.
- Add three layers of clear coat paint as a finishing touch and allow the entire job to dry for at least six hours.
