How to Fix a Hoover Vacuum

Repairing a Hoover vacuum is often possible for the owner to do at home, without the help of a professional repair service. The cost of using a service to fix a Hoover vacuum can be expensive, even for a simple repair. Reading the instructions that come with the Hoover is the first thing the owner should do when the vacuum does not work properly.

  1. Troubleshoot a Hoover vacuum by looking in the back of the instruction manual. Search online for help if you are unable to find your instruction manual. Read through the possible problems in the manual to see if you can identify what is wrong with your Hoover.

  2. Move the vacuum cleaner to an area where you can work on it. Do not plug the power cord into the wall while you are working on the Hoover. Remove the bag from the Hoover and empty the contents into a garbage can. If the bag is full, check inside the compartment that houses the bag to see if any loose particles are still inside the vacuum.

  3. Clean the bag compartment and plug the Hoover into the wall to see if it runs properly. If it does, the excess debris inside of the bag compartment may have been the only problem. If the Hoover still does not work, unplug the power cord and continue your investigation.

  4. Check the vacuum hose to see if a clog is preventing the Hoover from working. If you cannot see all the way through the hose, a clog probably exists. Use a wire coat hanger to dislodge the dirt and debris from the hose. Hold the hose over a garbage can so you do not spill the contents onto the floor. Plug the Hoover in and see if it works.

  5. Take the vacuum to a small appliance store if you cannot fix it on your own. Check to see if your Hoover is still under warranty. Find out the cost before you let the store complete any repairs.
