How to Get Approved for the Master Electrician Test
When a person becomes a master electrician, they have risen to the top of their field. Although it is a great honor to be a master electrician, it is not an accolade that comes easily. It requires a lot of work, classroom training and state certification.
- Get an education. Although it is likely that you have already taken classes in the past at a college or vocational school, it will be necessary to go back to school. Although each state places different requirements on classroom time, it is not unusual to need over 100 credits of classroom training before you will be considered for the master electrician test.
- Become an apprentice under a master electrician. Again, you may have done this in the past, but you may need additional apprenticeship time before you can apply to become a master electrician.
- Work as a journeyman electrician. This is the step directly below master electrician. It is the job of a journeyman to be a teacher, since they work directly with most standard electrician apprentices. Your state may put a stipulation as to how long you must be a journey level before you apply for master level, so refer to your state for this information.
- Apply for your master electrician license. This is done by filing the proper paperwork with the state and paying your certification fee. Once you have fulfilled these requirements, the state will then administer the master electrician test. If you pass, you become a card-carrying master electrician.
