How to Get DSL Service Without a Phone Line
If you're considering eliminating your home phone service, there's no need to worry about giving up Internet access. Many companies offer what is known as freestanding DSL, which is high-speed Internet service that does not require an active phone line. Installing this DSL can allow you to eliminate home phone service while enjoying the benefits of the world wide web.
Items needed:
- Computer with Internet capabilities
- Modem
- Ethernet cord
- Working phone jacks
1. Find a freestanding DSL provider by searching your local phone directory. You may also want to call your present provider to see if this option is available.
2. Choose an Internet service from the options available. Most carriers have plans based on the speed of your DSL service. Make an appointment for installation or install the program yourself with software provided by your carrier.
3. Hook up your modem by running a phone line from a working jack to the back of the modem. Run an ethernet cord from the modem to the back of your computer. You do not need to install a filter on your phone line.
4. If you are using a wireless router, hook this device up by running an ethernet cord from your modem to the back of the router. Hook up any other desktop computers by running an ethernet cord from the back of the router to the back of the computer tower.
5. Boot up your computer and open Internet Explorer or any other web browser of your choice. You are now connected to freestanding DSL and able to enjoy surfing the web without the fear of needing a phone line to do so.
