How to Get Started in the Miniature Model Making Business
The large market for various miniature models makes it a good choice for a work-at-home or self established business. All you need to get started is basic materials and tools, and a way to market. You can sell miniature models either online (at your own or another hobby/model retailer), at specialized trade shows or to specific clients or shops.
- Decide which type of model business you want to start. Create a business plan that includes what kind of models you want to specialize in (and the related client base), what materials you’ll need, and where your workshop and storage facility will be.
- Gather your materials and tools. These will vary greatly on the type of models you will be building, but can include miniature construction supplies (for model buildings and scenes), die cast tools and metal, woods, mechanical parts, adhesives, small working tools, and paints.
- Create your first designs, and then make some sample molds, models and/ or prototypes to show prospective clients and retailers.
- If you decide to sell on a personal website from home, create your products and post good quality pictures online. Make sure to keep your advertised amount of stock accurate, and have a shipping system (and all necessary shipping supplies) at the ready.
- Market your products. An excellent way to show off your products is at trade shows and exhibitions. You may have to join a miniature model organization to be allowed to vend at these shows, but they are a way to stand out and show off your quality to the people who are looking for your products like yours.
