How to Get a Grant for an Emerging Visual Artist
Starting out in the art field can be very challenging. It takes time to develop your skills and to be recognized in an industry with a lot of other artists seeking the same thing. One of the biggest challenges an emerging visual artist faces is lack of finances. Financial opportunities do exist for artists if you know where to look.
Finding a grant for a new artist who has not yet "hit it big" can be difficult. However, there are a number of nonprofit organizations that exist for emerging artists, enabling them to keep paying their bills while they are trying to make a mark in the industry.
- Artist in the Marketplace: This is a program operating through the Bronx Museum of the Arts which provides training and a place for the artist to exhibit his work in the New York area. Having a venue for displaying the artwork and getting his name out is essential to making a mark in the industry and financial stability. There is an application process with applications due in September and April.
- Artists Space of New York: This is a program that offers chances to exhibit the artist's work as well as professional assistance and financial support. The exhibit is designed for contemporary artwork. Every artist whose work is shown there receives financial assistance with cost for materials and transportation for getting the work to the exhibit.
- Contemporary Art Center in Long Island is equipped to offer work space in their studio for about 19 artists every year in a variety of different mediums. The entry deadline for inclusion into their program is April 15.
- National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts: This program is designed to raise appreciation for the arts and support of the arts on a financial basis. It offers college scholarships to teenagers and young adults who are entering the field through an annual talent search. A wide range of mediums are included, such as music, visual arts, writing, theater and photography.
