How to Get a Lawn Fertilizer License

Many people do not realize that a license may be required to use lawn fertilizer. This is not typically the case for those wishing to fertilize their own yards, but if certain chemicals or industrial strength brands are used then one may be needed.

  1. Determine that you have a need for the license. Typically, you do not need a license for fertilization if you are not making a profit off of the action. The type of equipment and chemicals you use may also be a factor.

  2. Check your state and local laws regarding licensing requirements and procedures. There are various sub-categories with the lawn maintenance and care category of licenses. You need to figure out which area you should apply for a license.

  3. Obtain the requirements for the licenses you desire. These requirements may vary depending on the area and type of fertilization license you are wishing to obtain. These requirements can differ from experience with certain chemicals, education level and training, and the type of machine you need for certain fertilizers. If you need something you should get this before turning in your application.

  4. Locate your state chemist's office. This is the state representative that governs the use of chemicals in agriculture. This person will take you application, and he or she will advise you of any additional requirements to obtain and keep the license. You may also have to pay a fee at this time; check with your state for specific amounts.
