How to Get an Insurance Check for a Collision Repair

If you have a car accident and your car is damaged, your insurance company should compensate you for that damage so you can get your car repaired. It depends on what type of coverage you have with your insurance company, but any type of collision coverage pays for a vehicle no matter who caused the accident. You have to file a claim with your insurance company to get an insurance check for the collision repair.

  1. Call your insurance company as soon as you can after the accident. If someone else is at fault, you may need to contact his or her insurance company also. Always contact your insurance company even if you call the insurance company of the responsible partly. Report the accident to the insurance company so they can start to investigate the accident.

  2. Set up a time for your automobile to be inspected. Most insurance companies allow an adjuster to come to your home or workplace to look at the vehicle, or you can take it to their facility to be looked at.

  3. Talk with the adjuster after he looks over the vehicle.  Ask the adjuster what repairs he thinks should be done and how much it is going to cost. Ask him what the settlement amount is going to be, and what parts will be needed to do the repairs on the vehicle.

  4. Ask the adjuster if he can give you the check right now. If he needs to mail it to you, make sure you give him the correct address to mail the check. You can also have the check mailed to the repair shop where you are going to get your car fixed, if you prefer.
