How to Troubleshoot a Portable Icemaker

How to Get the Strong Plastic Taste Out of a Portable Ice Maker

Portable ice makers are ideal for family gatherings, cocktail parties, or any number of gatherings where ice may be required. A portable ice maker can make up to 27 pounds of ice in 24 hours and most fit directly on the countertop for ease of use. Some ice makers may give ice a sharp plastic taste when first used.

  • Determine if your ice maker is self-cleaning or if you need to manually clean the ice maker. Depending on the ice maker, you may have to clean it differently.

  • Clean self-cleaning ice makers by pouring two teaspoons of warm water and two teaspoons of lemon juice or white vinegar into the self-cleaning reservoir. Start the cleaning cycle.

  • Clean non self-cleaning ice makers by pouring two tablespoons of warm water and two tablespoons of white vinegar or lemon juice into the reservoir. Run a cycle. Repeat these steps as many times as necessary to clean the ice maker.

  • For both ice makers, store it with the lid open for the first several months you have it. Letting the ice maker "air out" can help disperse some of the lingering plastic smell and taste.

  • Run several ice making cycles, disposing of the ice each time to attempt to rid the ice maker of the strong plastic smell and taste.

  • Place a small box of baking soda into the ice maker when you store it. The baking soda can help rid the ice maker of the plastic smell.

  • Place rolled up newspaper inside the ice maker. The newspaper acts as a natural deodorant and may be able to pull the smell and taste from the ice maker.
