How to Glue PVC Pipe

It is important to be able to correctly glue PVC pipe not only for plumbing repairs, but for any other application in which you are using the pipe. Today PVC is a popular plumbing and irrigation tubing, but it is also used in art pieces and outdoor furniture applications. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the steps involved when joining two of these pieces of pipe.

If you are using PVC pipe on a plumbing job, it is important that the glue be applied correctly to prevent leaks. Gluing improperly can result in leaks and costly repairs.

Contractors often differ on the best type's of glue and primer to use for the project. However, regardless of which brand they choose, they all agree on the techniques for applying it.

Supplies:

  • PVC Primer

  • PVC Glue

  1. Start by cutting the PVC pipe to its desired length. Use sandpaper to remove any burring on the edges, as this can affect the glue's efficiency.

  2. Try joining the pipes together first in a dry run before applying any primer or glue to make sure they fit properly.

  3. If the pipes fit properly, it is time to apply the primer. Spread the primer on the outside of the pipe to be inserted. It helps to clean the PVC and increases the glue's efficiency. Allow it to dry for 30 minutes.

  4. Apply one layer of glue to the primed area and also to the inside of the pipe which it is being joined to.

  5. Insert the pipe's into each other as far as they will go and twist the pipes about one-half of a turn to spread the glue evenly.

  6. Allow the pipes to dry eight hours if possible before exposing to water in order to give the glue time to dry and harden.
