How to Grade Land With a Tractor

Tractors are vehicles that are commonly used for a variety of outdoor tasks. The vehicles are designed to produce a great deal of power at low speeds, which is a particularly valuable aspect for professionals that work in agricultural and construction environments.

  1. Choose the appropriate time to grade your land. The best time to grade land is following heavy rainfall, as the soil will be moist and easier to shape; grading when the soil is dry and hard will result in an uneven grade and could even cause damage to your equipment. You can water the ground yourself if you plan to grade a small area or have the equipment necessary to distribute water over a large area.

  2. Prepare your equipment for the initial grading. You should fit a front scraper to a full-sized tractor or a garden tractor, depending on the resources you have available to you and the size of the land that you need to grade.

  3. Start the tractor, lower the blade to the ground and begin slowly driving forward. You may need to repeat this step for particularly uneven plots of land.

  4. Attach a box scraper to your tractor to start the precision grading process. This step is not always necessary, but will provide you with a more even grade than that achieved by the front scraper alone.

  5. Take steps to ensure that the land stays even. You can reduce the frequency of future gradings by planting cover vegetation or by covering the area with gravel or mulch.
