How to Handle Auto Insurance Claims

There are about 6 million car accidents that happen on a yearly basis.  Filing insurance claims happens around the clock, but it's always a relief knowing there is someone to help. There are some things that you should take into consideration and certain steps you should follow in order to ensure your insuance claim is handled properly.

Steps:

  1. Evaluate whether or not you should file an auto insurance claim. Any time you file an insurance claim, it goes on your insurance record whether it is your fault or not. Even if you are just calling about maybe filing a claim, it is often times recorded on your insurance record. If the accident is something you can pay for yourself without causing you any financial hardship you shoud do it.

  2. Make a detailed list on everything that happened in the accident as soon as possible. Oftentimes it is hard to recall the exact details, as things happen so quickly. You should also take pictures of the accident and damage to the vehicles involved. If you can, try to find a witness who is willing to speak on your behalf to your insurance company.

  3. File the claim right away. Never hesitate or prolong fiing an auto insurance claim. Your insurance company will handle all of the details of the claim, so it is best to speak with them as soon as possible.

  4. Get your vehicle fixed. Once the claim is settled you will probably get a call from your auto insurance company about sending an insurance adjuster out to assess the damage, or they will send you to a pre-approved repair shop to get your car fixed.
