How to Handle an Overheating Car

A car can overheat for many different reasons such as lack of water, damaged water hoses, worn out belts, and lack of ventilation. Once your vehicle overheats, you must pull over to prevent further damage to your vehicle. This article will teach you how to handle an overheating car.

How to Handle an Overheating Car

  1. If the air conditioner is on turn it off and turn on the heater. The heater will pull heat from the engine and cool it down.

  2. If the temperature gauge does not fall right away, pull over to a safe spot.

  3. Turn off the engine and open the hood. Use caution because the hood can be very hot.

  4. Do not open the radiator. This can cause burns and even eye injury.

  5. Allow the engine to cool for about half an hour.

  6. Once the engine is cool, start the engine and check the temperature. Drive the vehicle to the nearest service station, if the temperature is normal. If the engine continues to overheat, it is better to call a tow truck.
