How to Handle an Asthma Attack Without an Inhaler
Asthma attacks are a scary situation and each attack should be addressed immediately to prevent serious complications. A rescue inhaler is the best way to open the airways and gain control over the attack. When an inhaler is not available there are a few steps to take to regain an open airway. Dial 911 if emergency medical attention is needed.
Instructions
- Identify the trigger of the asthma attack and move away from it. Common triggers of asthma attacks are cigarette smoke, pet dander and perfume fragrances.
- Remain calm and sit down; anxiety and panic only heighten the attack. Avoid lying down as this position places unnecessary pressure on the lungs and reduces air capacity.
- Slowly inhale and exhale with a steady pressure and focus on taking deep breaths. Inhale air through the nose and exhale deeply through the mouth.
- Continue to focus on this breathing technique until the attack calms down. Once the asthma attack is under control, locate medication and take as directed or contact medical help.
- Dial 911 or have a bystander call for emergency assistance if the attack cannot be brought under control. Signal distress by waving arms or hands if the ability to talk is impossible.
