How to Control Asthma Symptoms

How to Control Asthma

Asthma is the result of an inflammation of the airways in the lungs. A number of factors including workplace hazards, pollution or rigorous exertion usually causes it. Signs of asthma include coughing, tightness of the chest, wheezing, and shortness of breath. There is no known cure for asthma; however, it is possible to control asthma and reduce the incidents of attacks.

  1. Find out what you're allergic to. Certain allergens like pollen and airborne mold can cause respiratory problems, including asthma. Track your symptoms in case you need to see a doctor. Keep a record of your asthma attacks, when they occur and how often. Keep a record of your use of over-the-counter inhalers. Most importantly, keep track of where you are and the environment you're in when the attacks occur, such as when you're near cherry trees or second-hand cigarette smoke.

  2. Avoid exposure to common pollutants. This includes exhaust fumes, smoke from burning wood or cigarettes, pet dander, and chemical fumes. Stay indoors during days when the air quality is bad or pollen is high.

  3. Buy an over-the-counter inhaler to control your asthma in the event of an attack.

  4. Reduce your level of exertion if heavy exercise coincides with asthma attacks.

  5. If no other method alleviates your asthma attacks, or if your attacks leave you very short of breath, you need to see a doctor. A doctor will diagnose the problem and prescribe medication in certain circumstances. It is important to use your medication as prescribed to keep control of your asthma.
