How to Know Symptoms of a Tomato Allergy
Tomato allergies can range from mild to severe. Many people with the allergy can experience different types of symptoms. Some of the symptoms may be a tingling in the lips, rash, hives or even a tightness in the chest. All of these symptoms can be very frightening, even if you have experienced them before. Tomato allergies are less known than any other publicized food allergy.
- Learn the difference between an allergy and food intolerance. An allergy reaction is caused by a histamine reaction of the protein that is found in the skin, juice and the seeds of the tomato. Food intolerances are actually more common than food allergies. Food intolerance symptoms include bloating, diarrhea and stomach discomfort. An intolerance is less severe than an allergy.
- Avoid fresh raw tomatoes. Many individuals experience their first symptoms immediately after eating raw tomatoes. You may experience itchy lips, hives, vomiting or a persistent skin rash. Sometimes this reaction is only seen after eating raw tomatoes.
- Read your food labels. Check all your labels to make sure they do not have any type of tomato ingredients. Avoid any type of products that are made using tomatoes. Many foods such as pizza and spaghetti should be avoided unless made without using tomatoes.
- Take notes as to when you first noticed your symptoms. This will help you and your doctor rule out whether you are experiencing an allergy or intolerance. Make sure you write down when your symptoms began and what was eaten before the reaction.
- Make an appointment with an allergist for a food allergy testing. If you suspect you have a tomato allergy, you will usually undergo both blood tests and a pin-prick allergy testing. The testing is usually not painful.
