How to Hang a Mirror

A properly placed mirror in the home can give a room the appearance of being larger. However, it's not as simple as hammering a nail in a wall and placing a mirror. It has to be placed at a level where most people can see themselves and where the wall is capable of supporting it.

  1. Tap on the wall, moving horizontally. When you hear a solid sound, as opposed to a hollow one, you have found a wall stud.

  2. Locate a position along the wall stud at a height where you can see your face and shoulders in the reflection. Mark the position. If your mirror has two anchors to hang it on then measure the distance between them and make sure your two wall marks are on studs that are that distance apart from each other.

  3. Hammer in a nail or work a screw into the wall where you found the stud. Make sure you have a strong nail or screw that can hold the weight of your mirror.

  4. Lift the mirror so its anchors are hooked onto the nail or screws. If the mirror is very heavy get someone else to help you. Slowly place the mirror in case the nail or screw bends or breaks, which could cause the mirror to fall and break.
