How to Heat Freeze Dried Food

Freeze drying is a preservation technique that works by removing moisture from foods such as fruits, vegetables and meat. In addition to preserving most items for three or more years, it is also good for camping or backpacking. The key to having freeze dried food is knowing how to heat it prior to eating it.

1. Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan.

2. Check the directions on the package to determine if the food should remain packaged when it is placed in the water. In some cases it may need to be opened and water added directly to the food.

3. If leaving the food sealed, place the package into a large bowl or container and pour the water on top of it. Leave the package in the water for the instructed amount of time before removing it completely.

4. If the instructions require the addition of water directly to the food, open the package and empty it into the bowl or container before adding the correct amount of water. Always follow the specific directions on the package, particularly when hydrating freeze dried foods outside of the packaging.
