How to Help Children Deal With a Pet Burial
Having a pet die can be a very sad time in someone's life, especially if that person is still very young. They might not understand why their pet is gone, or why they won't come back. How you deal with your child's feelings after one of their pets dies can be crucial in their development.
- Explain to your child that it is normal for pets to die. It's important that they understand that this is to be expected. Doing this will help them cope with future pet deaths.
- Be honest when you are telling them what happened to their pet. Telling them that they have went to a better place such as heaven can help, but telling them they went to live on a farm won't. This can lead your child to believe that they did something the shouldn't have. Your child should never believe it was their fault the pet died even if it happened to be.
- Ask your child if they understand what it means when their pet dies once you have explained it to them. Leave the discussion open for questions. Always be honest so you don't confuse your child.
- Allow your child to have a pet funeral for the burial of their pet. Let them understand that they should be sad and that it's alright to be. This can also help prepare them for future pet deaths, as well as people they are close to.
- Give your child some time to morn their pets death. Let them know that you understand that it is a difficult time and that you are there for them if they need to talk about it.
- Make sure they understand that their pet won't be coming back so they will be able to eventually move on.
