How to Make a Headstone Saddle
Headstone saddles are flower arrangements that sit on top of a cemetery headstone. They replace traditional flower arrangements that are stuck into the ground around the headstone. Headstone saddles can be purchased from many floral companies or can easily be made.
Items Needed:
- Floral foam
- Headstone saddle
- Artificial flowers
- Artificial greenery
- Wired ribbon
- Wired stick
- Wire cutters
- Place the floral foam inside the headstone saddle frame. You may need to position the foam several different ways to get it to fit properly.
- Measure and cut the stems of the artificial flowers and greenery so that they are all the same size.
- Begin to poke the flowers into the floral foam. Start at the outer edges of the foam, working your way out each side. Leave a half-inch space between the foam and the bottom of the flowers. Space the flowers evenly around the floral foam, leaving room for the greenery.
- Place some greenery toward the bottom of the foam and the base of the saddle. Fill in any spots between the flowers. Make sure that the entire piece of floral foam is covered.
- Use your hands to push all the flowers gently into the foam so that the bottoms of the flowers are touching the foam. If there are any bare spots, add more flowers or greenery and push them into the foam.
- Push the wired stick into the center of the floral arrangement. Make a bow with the wired ribbon, and attach it to the stick by twisting the wires together. Adjust the bow so the long pieces drape across the front of the saddle or hang down in front of it. Place the finished headstone saddle on top of the headstone.
