How to Hire a Handyman
Many homeowners choose to hire a handyman for help with various home projects. Word of mouth is often the easiest way to find a reliable handyman. If the homeowner can find a second handyman to call as well, the two can bid against each other so the homeowner can choose the one who has the best price.
- Ask a friend or neighbor for the name of a reliable handyman to call. Find out what kind of work the handyman provides for your friend or neighbor. Inspect the quality of the work and then give the handyman a call if you want to set up a time to meet.
- Show the handyman what you need done around your house. Ask for a written estimate so you can compare it with the price that a second handyman charges. Thank the handyman for stopping by and advise that you will be in touch if you decide to use the service.
- Call a second handyman to get another bid. If you do not know who to call, ask a local real estate agent for a recommendation. Agents use handyman services all the time to maintain properties. Call the real estate agent’s handyman and set up a time to meet at your home.
- Get a written bid from the second handyman after you go over the projects you want done. Compare the two bids and decide which handyman to hire. Keep the second handyman’s estimate in case you are not happy with the quality of the work you receive from your first choice.
- Call the handyman you choose and set up a time to start work on your various projects. If you have a priority list, give it to the handyman. After the handyman finishes the first project, inspect the quality of the work to see if you want to continue using the service. If the handyman does a good job, keep using the service until all of your projects are complete.
