How to Hold a Fly Fishing Rod
Fly fishing is one of the most popular sports around the world, because it can be done in freshwater or saltwater. Fly fishing requires the use of a lure or a fly that is artificial and the casting method is different than other forms of fishing as well, because fly fishing relies on the lures weight to pull the line forward after the person who is fly fishing casts it.
- Choose the right fishing rod. Make sure that you choose a rod that’s best for where you will be fishing and the conditions that you will be fishing in. Many men choose fly fishing rods measure up to nine feet in length, because most men are taller and have more upper body strength, while women typically choose fly fishing rods that measure between eight and eight and a half feet in length.
- Identify the right casting technique for your situation. It doesn’t matter if you will be fishing on a lake, river or in the ocean, every situation requires a casting technique that will be a little different and require you to use your forearm to swing the rod over your shoulder and then forward again. There are plenty of videos on YouTube and the Internet that teach easy to learn casting techniques.
- Relax your arm and wrist before grabbing your fly fishing rod. Relaxing the muscles in your arm and wrist won’t grow tried by the end of your fishing day. You should grasp your fly fishing rod around the “fat part” of the handle with your index finger pointing outward then use your other arm to pull the your wheels line and retrieve it from the water when you need to.
