How to Improve Garden Tiller Traction

Garden tillers that are light in weight are much more accommodating than the garden tillers that are small in size. The tillers can allow a person to till a small plot of land for a small garden in the backyard. The garden tillers that are small in size tend to loose grip on the soil when it is moved into a forward position. These problems can be improved with two major tips.

How to Improve Garden Tiller Traction

Purchase Bigger Tires

  1. Purchase pneumatic tires and rims for the garden tillers. These types of tires are wider and provide more traction. They make it easier to till more of the land.

  2. The larger tillers will need to be jacked up off the ground to change the tires and rims. The smaller tillers do not need to be jacked up.

  3. Use a wrench to loosen the nuts on the old tires. Remove the nuts and place them to the side.

  4. Take the old rim off and put on the new one. Place the tire over the rim. Replace the nuts and tighten them with a wrench.

Make the Tiller Heavy

  1. Many tillers have compartments on them where sand can be added. Most of the compartments are found on the top of the small tillers. Extra weight will improve the traction of the tiller so more area can be covered. Some of the tillers will only allow 14 pounds of sand to be added to increase the weight.

  2. Open the lid on the compartment. Add new builder’s sand to the tiller until it is full. Close the compartment.

  3. If the tiller does not have a compartment for sand, you can make your own weight to add to the tiller to make it heavy.

  4. Fill a milk container with builder’s sand. You can use a gallon milk container for this task.

  5. Add a piece twine to the handle on the milk container and tie it tight. Tie the twine to the tiller.

  6. Another way to increase the tiller’s weight is to add ballast to the tires. It is a liquid that can be added to the tires like air. It will make the tiller heavy and will not harm the tires. Apply it through the valve stems.
