How to Include the Mother of the Bride

There are many ways to include the mother of the bride in the wedding ceremony. Many couples choose the have both mothers involved in several simple traditions. Rose and candle ceremonies are common ways to include not only mothers, but anyone that you may want to include in the ceremony.

There are several little ceremonies you can choose to add to the wedding that will make mothers feel as if they have a part in the day.

Candle Lighting

  • Set two single taper candles, one on each side of your unity candle.

  • Leave a lighter nearby.

  • Direct the mothers to walk down the aisle before everyone else and light the two taper candles.

During the ceremony the bride and groom will use the tapers to light the unity candle. A variation of this has the mothers walking down the aisle with lit candles and placing them on the sides of the unity candle.

It is a beautiful way to signify the joining of two families.

Roses

Another tradition involves roses; you only need to have two roses for this to happen.

  • Place one rose on the bride’s side and one on the groom’s side where the ceremony will take place.

  • Hand a rose to each mom as you walk back up the aisle, give them a hug and then proceed up the aisle.

These are both great ways to make mothers feel included in some small way and to show how important they are to you. Many people combine both traditions.
